Declan's First Birthday

Everyone here at the house is feeling miserable from some sort of cold or flu bug so I don't have a lot to write. We had a small little thing yesterday with just us - because everyone is feeling sick. This weekend we are having some friends and playmates come by for a little celebration.

So here are the pics. We couldn't find our hats at party time (?) but we did enjoy our cake and decorations. Declan was a little sleepy and you will see that in some of the pics. Kadin was very helpful and helped me wrap gifts, get the cake ready and even open all the gifts as well. :)

A letter to Declan

From Babu...

Declan;

It's almost 10 o'clock on your first birthday, and you are sound asleep. Hopefully you don't get a bad tummy from the cake you ate tonight! We have a picture where you're sitting in your high-chair, smearing cake all over your tray, and bending your face down to lick the icing off it. When you're older I promise to show that picture off to your friends.

I loved watching you and your bhai-jan (Kadin, for anyone else reading this) playing with your birthday toys. He was teaching you how to hit the buttons on the smash-em-up toy your nanny got you.

A year ago today, your mother and I marvelled at the beautiful, brown and hairy little boy who entered our life. It seems like just yesterday that I held your tiny little old-man face close to me; you had an invisible chin, and these GIANT jowls.

Today, you're toddling along everywhere in the house. You have 5 teeth, and they are wonderfully crooked. You have a brilliant smile, and a goofy laugh. You sound like a pterodactyl sometimes with this high-pitched excited squeal you let out quite often.

You probably don't understand right now, but you have an older brother who loves you fiercely. So fiercely, that's he's always hugging you roughly and banging you against the floor, couch, coffee table or entertainment center. He means well, and you always go back and play with him again anyways.

I marvel at your growth and development every single day. You sorta kinda said cheese in the tub tonight, though it sounded like "..eeeeeeeeeeze". I'm sure in a few weeks you'll be rattling off all kinds of words!

I love you so much, and am thankful every day to have you and your brother in my life.

Now to get you to sleep through the night....

From Mommy...

So you are sleeping now and it has been a long but wonderful day

Today, Declan Dwayne, you turned one. And although on some nights it feels like an eternity has passed - I swear it was 3 months ago when you came home. We have been very busy and very tired around here and you have grown so quickly.

You and I had a longer drive home from the hospital, but it certainly feels as if it was yesterday. You made not one sound and the day was a beautiful one.

Now here we are and an entire year has passed. At six months you got sick and you have not slept through the night since. Depsite the lack of sleep you continue to be a joyful, happy child. You have what I affectionately call the crazy smile - which makes anyone who see's it, laugh.

Declan you also have this cackle laugh that escapes you when you are overwhelmingly excited. You have a deep attachment to your Babu and you already clearly say "babu", along with other words like mom-mom, na-na for Kadin, nan-nan and today in the tub you may have said cheese.

Your relationship with Kadin is a heartwarming sight. You two play together endlessly but even at this young age can also be found hugging and dancing and even wrestling together.

I cannot wait for your personality to develop and I wonder if your develish ways will persist. I also wonder if your still hazel and always complimented eyes will get any bigger or bluer.

I also wonder if tonight..just tonight..you may sleep longer than 3 hours at a time? hehe

So congratulations on turning one. You have changed our lives in so many wonderful and sweet ways. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for you in the many years to come.

HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY DECLAN!!!

Just happened...

Kadin comes from his room and says to me in the kitchen "Mommy, what is babu?" I ask "Do you mean his nationality? Where he is from?"

"Yes", he replies "what is he?"

I answer "Babu is Pakistani." Kadin smiles and giggles and runs to his room.

He returns moments later and sits pouting at his table in the dining room.

"What's up Kadin?" I ask.

"I'm nothing", is his reply.

Wow...I now know what this is about. He is only 4.

"What do you mean Kadin?" asks Hasan.

Kadin explains. "Mommy is newfie and babu is pakistani and I am just Squamish!"

Everything stops. Hasan takes Kadin to the table and tells him the wonders of being a pewfie and I chime in how two is always better then 1...right?

Kadin is excited now and begins laughing and joking around and appears to have accepted the answer and walked away happy.

Hasan looks at me and says "Well..."

"I thought we had maybe another 10 years for that one.", is my response.

Identity questions...at 4. Wow.

Kadin-Four Years Old

**Originally written Saturday the 8th but internet bad! Boo internet!**

So I have lots of pics to put up for the birthday. I have to say it was a fantastic day and I know Kadin felt the same cause he told us all day.

Hey... way to make us feel good on your bday Kadin!? hahha

Kadin loved his presents and wanted to play with them all immediately so thank you nanny, poppy and dadi , aba jan.

Today you could really see that Kadin knew all eyes were on him, but he was so kind and loving about it. He told us over and over how much he loved us and how thankful he was and how this was the best birthday ever. He is just such a sweet, caring and sincere child. We could not be more blessed.

Kadin is a special boy for us. He brought so much joy into our lives and he truly was our guiding light.

Today we rode bike, ate too much cake, played baseball and went out to dinner. No party in case you're wondering. I dont really believe in them for kids this age. He has started school now and he will want parties with his friends and they will cost money, a lot of it, but at least at an older age, he has some chance of remembering something.

Now this year was the beginning of that but I did get lucky. Tomorrow Hasan's work is having their family BBQ at Playland of all places!! I mean what better party could a kid ask for - two hundred or so kids and a park filled with roller coasters - nothing really.

And Kadin could not be more excited about his huge bday party at Playland.

**Please note we forgot the memeory card for the camera for the Playland trip and although we did go and he had a blast - I have no proof. :( **

Kadin just about passed out when he went to bed tonite. So tuckered out from all the fun. As I went in to turn off his light and tuck him in I could not help but stop and stare.

Four years. Four. It stuns me. :) Kadin is so smart and so freakin fantastic and just the kind of child you want to write poetry about.

(PS - We love Declan too of course but this is Kadin's birthday and now we have 12 days to get ready for Declan's big #1!!!!)

Someone is very excited about big brother Kadin's birthday!

We had lots of time outside but only remembered to get pics as we were getting ready to come inside. Kadin was allowed to choose all he wanted to do, so we rode bikes for awhile and then it was on to his favorite passtime outside - baseball. The ball you see here was given by our neighbour.

Daisy got herself stuck while we were outside. Little nerd!

And finally we have Kadin and Hasan shaving together. Can you stand the cuteness? Declan gave Kadin the shaving kit for his birthday. *wink*

And yes my husband is yet again shirtless. Do not complain to me - I have no control!!! hehe
